For patients from Iraq
Treatment in Azerbaijan for patients from Iraq
Baku is a short flight from Iraq, and Azerbaijan is a Muslim-majority country where halal food is easy to find. Clinics in Baku offer check-ups, cardiology, orthopaedics, oncology consultations and fertility treatment, and the resort town of Naftalan is known for its oil therapy for joints and skin.
Rules checked in October 2026. Your coordinator confirms them before every trip.
Visitor numbers from Iraq are still modest. Azerbaijan received 7,405 visitors from Iraq in 2025, against 5,320 in 2024, and most of them stayed in Baku. Unlike the Gulf states, Iraq needs a visa arranged before travel, so planning ahead matters more than usual.
Entry and stay
- 1
Citizens of Iraq need a visa to enter Azerbaijan, and it must be obtained before the trip. Since 10 July 2024, Iraqi citizens apply for Azerbaijani visas through VFS Global, which has a visa application centre in Baghdad. Typical documents include a passport valid for at least 3 months beyond the visa, photographs, medical insurance, proof of funds and travel or accommodation details.
- 2
Azerbaijani law also provides for a visa for medical treatment, issued on the invitation of an Azerbaijani medical institution. The exact procedure for Iraqi applicants is not published in detail, so your coordinator helps you prepare the clinic invitation and the documents and checks the current requirements with the visa centre before you apply. Please contact us early, as the visa takes time.
- 3
If you live in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain or Qatar and hold a residence permit there that is valid for at least 6 more months, you may be eligible for a single entry 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Azerbaijani international airports. This arrangement applies from 15 February 2026 to 15 February 2027. Tell us where you live, and your coordinator confirms whether it applies to you and whether it suits your treatment plan.
- 4
If you stay longer than 15 days, you must register at the place of stay with the State Migration Service within 15 days of arrival. Usually the hotel or the resort submits it, and your coordinator checks that it is done.
- 5
Entry rules can change, and your coordinator confirms them before every trip. If the treatment may last longer than the visa allows, tell us at the start so that the right visa can be arranged in advance. Summer is the busy season in Azerbaijan, so for June to September please plan and book early.
Getting to Azerbaijan
Iraqi Airways has operated direct flights to Baku from several Iraqi cities, and a route from Basra opened in July 2026. Direct schedules from Baghdad, Basra, Najaf and Erbil are thin and often seasonal, and flight schedules across the region changed several times during 2026, so in some months a connecting flight is the practical choice. A direct flight from Baghdad takes about 2 hours. Your coordinator checks the current options for your dates, and our driver meets you at Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku.
Money and payments
- The local currency is the Azerbaijani manat, held at about 1.70 manat per US dollar. The Iraqi dinar is not on the Central Bank of Azerbaijan currency list and is difficult to exchange in Baku, so please bring US dollars in cash and exchange them at banks or licensed exchange offices.
- Visa and Mastercard cards are widely accepted in Azerbaijan. Whether an Iraqi bank card works abroad depends on the issuing bank, so please check this with your bank before travelling.
- Your coordinator explains the payment options for treatment and services in advance, so that you know what to prepare. Please note that Friday is a working day in Azerbaijan and the weekend is Saturday and Sunday, which helps when planning clinic appointments.
