Second opinion in oncology in Azerbaijan
An oncologist reviews your diagnosis and treatment plan, starting remotely from your records and images.
Typical figures. The exact plan is confirmed by the treating doctor after the medical review.
A second opinion in oncology means that another oncologist looks carefully at your diagnosis and the treatment plan you have been offered. MedAzerbaijan arranges this with oncologists at licensed clinics in Azerbaijan. The review usually starts remotely from your histology report, scans on a disc and treatment summary, and in complex cases the doctor may discuss them with colleagues from other specialties, in the way a tumour board works.
A second opinion supports your treating team at home and does not replace it. Please do not stop or delay ongoing treatment, and if new or worsening symptoms appear, seek care at home without delay. If a pathology review or repeat imaging such as PET-CT is needed, it may be arranged in Baku as the doctor decides. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic, and organises the practical side.
Who it may suit
- Patients with a new cancer diagnosis who want another careful look before treatment begins
- Those who have been offered surgery, chemotherapy or radiotherapy and want the plan reviewed
- People whose histology result is unclear or whose diagnosis is still being clarified
- Patients with a suspected recurrence or a change in the course of the disease
- Families who want to understand the options more clearly, in agreement with the treating doctor
How the procedure is organised
-
1
Collecting your records
You send the histology report, scan reports with the images on a disc or via a link, discharge summaries and the treatment plan offered at home. We check that nothing important is missing and arrange translation where needed.
-
2
Review by an oncologist
An oncologist studies the documents and the images. Depending on the type of tumour, a pathologist, radiologist, surgeon or radiation oncologist may also look at the case, and complex situations may be discussed together in a tumour board format.
-
3
Online consultation
If you wish, the oncologist can go through the findings with you and your family by video call. It can be booked before travelling and is a good moment to ask about the diagnosis and the options.
-

Additional tests in Baku, if needed
When the documents are not enough, the doctor may suggest a review of the original slides or paraffin blocks, or repeat imaging such as PET-CT in Baku. We explain the reason and plan a trip only after the doctor recommends it.
-
5
Written opinion
You receive a written opinion in Russian or English on the diagnosis and the treatment options that may be considered. It gives your treating team additional information, while decisions stay with you and your doctors.
-
6
Back to your treating team
We can send the opinion to your oncologist at home, who remains in charge of your care. If treatment in Azerbaijan is discussed later, it is planned separately with the treating doctors there.
What the cost depends on
The cost of a second opinion depends on the volume of records, whether translation is needed, how many specialists review the case and whether pathology review or repeat imaging is added. After a doctor looks at the list of your documents, we send a written estimate before any work starts or any trip is booked.
- Remote review of the records and the written opinion
- Translation of medical documents
- Pathology review of slides or blocks, if the doctor requests it
- Repeat imaging such as PET-CT, if needed
- Transfers, accommodation and an interpreter, if a visit to Baku is planned
Recovery and the trip home
- A remote second opinion needs no travel and no break in your current treatment.
- If you come to Baku for tests, you can usually return to normal activities the same day, and the staff explain any precautions after PET-CT.
- Your oncologist at home receives the written opinion and decides with you how to take it into account.
- Questions that come up later can be passed to the reviewing oncologist through your coordinator.

Frequently asked questions
Can I get a second opinion without travelling to Baku?
In many cases, yes. The oncologist reviews your records and images remotely and prepares a written opinion, and an online consultation can be arranged. A visit is suggested only if the doctor needs a pathology review, repeat imaging or an examination in person.
Should I pause my treatment while waiting for the second opinion?
No, please do not stop or postpone treatment on your own. Any change should be discussed with your treating oncologist. If you have urgent symptoms such as severe pain, bleeding, high fever or breathlessness, seek medical help at home straight away.
What is a histology review and when is it needed?
A pathologist re-examines the original slides or paraffin blocks from your biopsy or operation, sometimes with additional tests such as immunohistochemistry. It may be suggested when the result is unclear or important for choosing treatment. You request the material from the laboratory at home, and we explain how to bring or send it to Baku.
Can a second opinion change a cancer diagnosis?
Sometimes a second opinion clarifies the type or stage of the tumour, and sometimes it confirms the original diagnosis and plan. Both results are useful. The opinion is shared with your treating doctors, who discuss with you whether anything should change.
Does the second opinion replace my doctor at home?
No. It supports your treating team and gives them additional information. Your oncologist at home remains responsible for your care, and we can send the written opinion directly to them. If you later consider treatment in Azerbaijan, this is discussed separately.
Send your reports and receive a treatment plan
Tell us about your condition. A coordinator will reply in your language, and the specialist will review your documents.
