Shoulder pain treatment in Baku
Orthopedic assessment, ultrasound or MRI, physiotherapy and, for selected tears, arthroscopy in Baku for shoulder pain.
Shoulder pain has many possible causes. The most common are rotator cuff problems, impingement, when a tendon is pinched as the arm is lifted, and frozen shoulder, a painful stiffening of the joint capsule. Arthrosis of the shoulder is less frequent. Pain may also spread from the neck, and pain in the left shoulder together with chest pain or breathlessness may signal a heart problem that needs emergency help at once.
In Baku the first step is a consultation with an orthopedic surgeon, who tests movement and strength in the shoulder and decides whether an ultrasound or MRI is needed. Many patients improve with physiotherapy and exercises, and the doctor chooses other options. Arthroscopic surgery is considered for selected rotator cuff tears or repeated dislocations. We review your reports in advance, send a written estimate and help with the visa, transfers, accommodation and an interpreter.
Treatment options in Azerbaijan
Orthopedic assessment with imaging
An orthopedic surgeon checks movement, strength and painful positions of the shoulder and examines the neck as well. Ultrasound or MRI is arranged when needed to look at the tendons and the joint.
OrthopedicsPhysiotherapy and exercises
A physiotherapist plans exercises that restore movement and strengthen the rotator cuff and the muscles around the shoulder blade. With frozen shoulder progress is often slow, and the programme continues at home for months.
RehabilitationOther options decided by the doctor
Depending on the examination, the doctor may consider medicines for pain, an injection or other methods. Which of them suit you and which ones the clinic offers is confirmed after the consultation.
Arthroscopic surgery for selected tears
When a rotator cuff tear causes lasting pain and weakness, or the shoulder dislocates again and again, the surgeon may suggest arthroscopy. Afterwards the arm rests in a sling for some weeks and recovery takes months.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between impingement and a rotator cuff tear?
Impingement means that a rotator cuff tendon is irritated or pinched when the arm is raised, while a tear is damage to the tendon itself, partial or complete. Both may cause pain when lifting the arm and at night. An examination together with ultrasound or MRI helps the orthopedic surgeon tell them apart.
Does a rotator cuff tear always need surgery?
No. Many partial tears, and some complete tears in older or less active people, are treated with physiotherapy and exercises. Surgery is more often considered after a fresh injury with clear weakness, for large tears in active people or when pain continues despite rehabilitation. The surgeon decides after the examination and MRI.
How are frozen shoulder and periarthritis treated?
The older term periarthritis covered several different shoulder conditions, so the doctor first clarifies the exact diagnosis. Frozen shoulder usually passes through painful, stiff and recovery stages over many months, often a year or longer. Treatment aims to ease pain and keep movement with exercises and physiotherapy, and the doctor may add medicines or an injection. Surgery is considered only rarely.
Can Naftalan help with shoulder pain?
Some patients with chronic shoulder pain, for example from arthrosis, consider a Naftalan resort course outside an acute phase. Scientific evidence is limited, results vary and a course does not repair a torn tendon. It is planned only if the resort physician finds it suitable after an examination, and it is not prescribed for cancer, severe heart failure, blood disorders or during pregnancy.
How long should I plan to stay in Baku?
A consultation with ultrasound or MRI usually fits into one or two days, and a short course of physiotherapy can be added. After shoulder arthroscopy the stay is longer, and the surgeon confirms when it is safe to fly home. If you would like an opinion first, you can book an online consultation with a doctor before the trip.
