Atopic dermatitis in children, assessment and care in Baku
Assessment by a paediatric dermatologist in Baku, a daily skin care plan and, only if the doctors agree, a resort course in a calm phase.
Atopic dermatitis in children, also called childhood eczema, causes dry, itchy and inflamed skin that comes and goes. It often starts in the first year of life, on the cheeks or in the folds of the elbows and knees. Itching can disturb sleep for the whole family. In many children the skin becomes calmer with age, but not in all, so the aim is a clear daily plan and fewer flares.
A paediatric dermatologist or allergist in Baku examines the child, reviews the creams used so far and draws up a care plan. A resort course in Naftalan is considered only in a calm phase and only if the child's doctor and the resort physician agree. The child always travels with a parent or legal guardian. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a medical institution. We arrange the records review, a written estimate, transfers and an interpreter.
Treatment options in Azerbaijan
Paediatric dermatologist or allergist assessment
The doctor examines the skin, asks about possible triggers, sleep and feeding, and reviews the creams and medicines used so far. Signs of infection and other skin conditions that can look similar are checked as well.
Daily skin care and a treatment plan
The basis is usually regular moisturising and gentle washing, with anti-inflammatory creams during flares as prescribed. In more severe cases the doctor may discuss other options, chosen according to the child's age. Only the doctor prescribes them and sets how long they are used.
Allergy testing when useful
Allergy tests are not needed for every child. The doctor may suggest them when a reaction to food or another allergen is suspected and explains the results, because a positive test alone does not always mean a real allergy. Foods are removed from the diet only on medical advice.
Check-up and diagnosticsResort course in a calm phase
For some children a Naftalan course outside a flare may be considered. It needs the agreement of both the child's doctor and the resort physician, and the resort sets its own age limits and a gentler programme. Evidence for children is limited, and the course does not replace daily care.
NaftalanWhere treatment takes place
Who it may suit
- Children with atopic dermatitis whose skin keeps flaring despite the care prescribed at home
- Families who want a paediatric dermatologist to review the treatment plan and daily skin care
- Children in whom a food or other allergy is suspected and the doctor finds testing useful
- Older children in a stable phase for whom both doctors consider a resort course reasonable
- Families seeking a second opinion before starting a new long-term treatment
When the trip should wait
- A widespread weeping or crusted rash with fever, or painful clusters of blisters and small sores that spread quickly, may be an infection such as eczema herpeticum and needs urgent care at home
- Swelling of the face or lips or difficulty breathing after contact with food or another allergen needs emergency help at once
- During an acute flare the skin is treated first, and a resort course is planned only once it has calmed down
- Naftalan is not used below the age limit set by the resort or without the agreement of the child's doctor, and not with fever, acute infection, blood disorders or other contraindications named by the resort physician
The final decision is always made by the doctor after reviewing your documents.
Documents for the medical review
Send whatever you already have. If something is missing, the doctor will tell you what else is needed.
- Reports from the paediatrician, dermatologist or allergist with the diagnosis
- A list of creams, ointments and medicines used so far, with how long they were used and how the skin responded
- Recent photos of the skin during a flare and in a calmer period
- Results of allergy tests and blood tests, if they were done
- Information about the child's general health, other allergies, asthma and vaccinations
- The child's passport, birth certificate and, where your country requires it, notarised consent from the second parent or documents confirming guardianship
Frequently asked questions
Will my child grow out of atopic dermatitis?
In many children the skin becomes calmer as they grow, while in others dry skin and flares continue into later years. It is not possible to predict this with certainty. Good daily care and timely treatment of flares help keep the skin more comfortable, and the doctor adjusts the plan as the child grows.
Is neurodermatitis the same as atopic dermatitis?
Usually yes. In older medical reports, especially in Russian, the word neurodermatitis was often used for what is now usually called atopic dermatitis. The doctor in Baku reviews the earlier reports and examines the skin to confirm the diagnosis, because some other skin conditions can look similar. Many doctors in Azerbaijan speak Russian, and an interpreter can join the consultation.
Can atopic dermatitis in a child be treated with Naftalan?
Naftalan has traditionally been used for chronic skin conditions in Azerbaijani resort medicine, but evidence, especially for children, is limited. A course is considered only in a calm phase, only if the child's doctor and the resort physician agree, and within the age limits the resort sets. It does not replace daily skin care and the treatment prescribed at home.
How long should the family stay in Azerbaijan?
A consultation with any tests usually takes 1 to 2 days, so most families plan 2 to 4 days in Baku. If both doctors agree to a resort course, the stay is longer, and the resort physician sets the length of the programme for the child. If you would like to speak with a doctor first, an online consultation can be booked before travelling.
How much does a visit to a paediatric dermatologist in Baku cost?
The cost depends on the consultations and tests the doctor considers necessary, whether a resort course is planned, accommodation for the child and the accompanying adult, and transfers. After the doctor reviews your child's documents, we send a written estimate before you travel.
