Herniated disc treatment in Azerbaijan
Neurological examination with MRI, physiotherapy and conservative care for a disc herniation, with surgery only when indicated.
Herniated disc treatment in Azerbaijan begins with a neurologist or spine specialist in Baku, who checks your reflexes, strength and sensation and compares them with a recent MRI. A herniation forms when part of the soft centre of a disc pushes outwards and irritates a nerve root. In the lower back this often causes pain spreading into the leg, and in the neck pain spreading into the arm.
In most people the symptoms of a herniation settle gradually over several weeks or months, so treatment usually starts without surgery. It may include medicines, physiotherapy, exercise therapy and sometimes injections, as the doctor decides. Outside an acute episode a Naftalan course may be added if the doctor allows it. Surgery is considered only with clear indications. We review your MRI, send a written estimate and arrange the visa and an interpreter.
Treatment options in Azerbaijan
Neurological examination and MRI
A neurologist or spine specialist in Baku checks how the nerves are working and reviews your MRI, or arranges a new scan if yours is old or the symptoms have changed. The doctor explains which findings match your complaints.
MRI and CT scanConservative care and physiotherapy
Medicines for pain and nerve irritation, physiotherapy and an individual exercise programme are planned by the doctor. Injections near the nerve root may be one of the options. You leave with exercises to continue at home.
RehabilitationNaftalan course between episodes
Once the acute pain has settled, daily Naftalan procedures at a resort clinic for 10 to 14 days may be added if your doctor allows it and the resort physician finds no contraindications. Naftalan does not remove a herniation.
NaftalanSurgery when indicated
If leg or arm pain persists despite proper conservative care, or weakness increases, a spine surgeon may recommend removing the part of the disc that presses on the nerve after full tests.
Spine surgeryWhere treatment takes place
Who it may suit
- Adults with a lumbar or cervical disc herniation confirmed on MRI and pain spreading to the leg or arm
- People whose pain has not settled enough with treatment at home and who want a specialist plan
- Patients who have been offered surgery and would like a second opinion first
- People who want a structured physiotherapy and exercise programme for a herniated disc
- Patients who would like to add a Naftalan course outside an acute episode, if the doctor allows it
When the trip should wait
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the saddle area around the groin and inner thighs or rapidly increasing weakness in the legs need urgent care at the nearest hospital at home
- Back or neck pain with fever, unexplained weight loss, a history of cancer or after a recent injury should first be examined by a local doctor
- During a severe acute episode the journey itself may be hard, so the trip is usually planned once the pain is under control
- Naftalan procedures are not prescribed for cancer, severe heart failure, blood disorders, acute infections or during pregnancy
The final decision is always made by the doctor after reviewing your documents.
Documents for the medical review
Send whatever you already have. If something is missing, the doctor will tell you what else is needed.
- MRI of the affected part of the spine with the radiologist's report, ideally from the last 6 months or newer if the symptoms have changed
- Report from a neurologist or neurosurgeon
- A short description of your symptoms, such as which leg or arm hurts and any numbness or weakness
- List of current medicines and previous treatment, such as injections, physiotherapy or surgery
- Information about other chronic conditions and recent blood tests if available
- Passport copy for the visa and booking
Frequently asked questions
How is a herniated disc treated without surgery?
Treatment without surgery is usually planned in stages. It may include medicines for pain, physiotherapy, an exercise programme and sometimes an injection near the nerve root, as the doctor decides. Many people gradually return to normal activity, and the doctor adjusts the plan to how the symptoms change.
Why does a lumbar disc herniation cause leg pain?
A herniation in the lower back can press on or irritate a nerve root that runs down the leg, so pain, tingling or numbness is often felt in the buttock, thigh or foot rather than in the back itself. The neurologist checks which nerve is involved and compares this with the MRI.
When is removal of a disc herniation considered?
Removal is usually discussed when leg or arm pain stays severe after several weeks of proper conservative care, when weakness increases or when daily life is seriously limited. The spine surgeon decides after examining you and reviewing the MRI. Details of the operation are on our spine surgery page.
Can I go to Naftalan with a herniated disc?
A Naftalan course may be considered outside an acute episode, when the pain has eased, and only if your doctor allows it and the resort physician finds no contraindications. Some patients feel less pain and stiffness afterwards, although results vary. Naftalan does not remove the herniation itself.
How long should I plan to stay?
A neurologist consultation with MRI usually takes one or two days, and a rehabilitation or Naftalan course usually lasts 10 to 14 days. The doctor confirms the exact length after the examination. We then send a written estimate, and you can also book an online consultation with a doctor before travelling.
