MRI and CT scans in Baku are carried out at licensed diagnostic centres and hospital departments with modern equipment. Patients from abroad most often come for MRI of the spine, MRI of the head and brain, joints or abdomen, or for CT of the chest and other areas. A doctor decides which method and which areas answer your medical question, sometimes after looking at earlier scans.

We do more than book the scan. After the examination a radiologist writes a report, a doctor explains the results to you in plain words, and the report is translated into Russian or English. Before the trip we review your referral and medical history and send a written cost estimate. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic, so we organise transfers, an interpreter and accommodation.

Who it may suit

  • People whose doctor has recommended an MRI or CT scan and who want to have it during a trip to Baku
  • Patients with back or neck pain, numbness or a suspected disc herniation for whom spinal MRI is advised
  • People with headaches, dizziness or other neurological symptoms referred for an MRI of the head
  • Patients who want earlier scans reviewed again and the results explained in Russian or English
  • Those planning treatment in Azerbaijan who need up-to-date imaging first

How the procedure is organised

  1. 1
    Review of your request

You send the referral, a description of your symptoms and any earlier scans. A doctor confirms which scan and which areas are needed and whether contrast may be required, and we prepare a written cost estimate.

  2. 2
    Safety questions before the scan

Before an MRI the staff ask about pacemakers, implants, metal fragments, pregnancy and fear of enclosed spaces. Some implants allow MRI only under special conditions, so please tell us about them in advance.

  3. 3
    Scan day

During an MRI you lie still for about 20 to 60 minutes while the scanner makes loud knocking sounds, and you are given headphones or earplugs. A CT scan usually takes only a few minutes. If contrast is needed, it is given through a vein.

  4. 4
    Radiologist report

A radiologist studies the images and writes a report, usually within one or two working days. You receive the images on a disc or through a download link.

  5. 5
    Explanation and translation

A doctor goes through the report with you, answers your questions and, if needed, suggests which specialist to see next. The report is translated into Russian or English, with an interpreter present.

  6. 6
    Next steps at home

You take the images and the translated report home for your own doctor. If treatment is needed, we can arrange a specialist consultation in Baku or online.

What the cost depends on

The cost of an MRI or CT scan depends on the area examined, the number of areas, whether contrast is needed and the type of scanner. After a doctor reviews your request, we send a written estimate before you travel. It lists the scan, the report, the explanation by a doctor and the translation, so you know in advance what is included.

  • The area and the number of areas scanned
  • Contrast, if the doctor considers it necessary
  • The method and the type of scanner
  • Explanation of the results by a doctor and translation of the report
  • Transfers, an interpreter and accommodation
Get a written estimate You receive the estimate in writing before you book anything.

Recovery and the trip home

  • After a scan without contrast you can return to your usual activities straight away.
  • After contrast the staff may advise you to drink more water that day, and breastfeeding mothers should ask the doctor for advice in advance.
  • If a mild sedative was given because of fear of enclosed spaces, you should not drive for the rest of the day and should have a companion with you.
  • Flying home is usually possible once you have the report, but if the doctor suggests further tests, the plan is discussed with you first.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an MRI cost in Baku?

The cost depends on the area, the number of areas, contrast and the type of scanner. After a doctor reviews your request, we send a written estimate that includes the report, the explanation by a doctor and the translation. You know what is included before you book your trip.

How long does an MRI of the spine or head take?

An MRI of one area of the spine or of the head usually takes about 20 to 40 minutes, and longer if several areas or contrast are needed. The radiologist report is usually ready within one or two working days, and the clinic confirms the timing when booking.

Can I have an MRI if I have a pacemaker or metal implants?

It depends on the device. Many modern implants allow MRI under specific conditions, while some older devices do not. Please send the device card or the operation report in advance, and the doctor decides whether MRI is safe or whether CT is a better option.

Will a doctor explain my results in Russian?

Yes. Many doctors in Baku speak Russian, and an interpreter is available when needed. The doctor goes through the report with you, and the written report is translated into Russian or English for your own doctor at home.

Do I need an MRI or a CT scan?

The two methods answer different questions. MRI shows soft tissues such as the brain, spinal discs and ligaments in detail, while CT is often better for the lungs, bones and some urgent questions. A doctor chooses the method after reading your documents, and you can book an online consultation before travelling if you would like to discuss it.
