Neck pain and cervical osteochondrosis treatment in Azerbaijan
Neurologist assessment, cervical spine MRI when indicated, physiotherapy and Naftalan courses for neck pain, with surgery only for selected cases.
Neck pain and cervical osteochondrosis treatment in Azerbaijan starts with a neurologist in Baku. Age-related changes in the discs and small joints of the neck can cause pain and stiffness, headaches at the back of the head and pain or tingling spreading into the shoulder or arm. The doctor examines your neck, checks reflexes, strength and sensation in the arms and decides whether an MRI of the cervical spine is needed.
Dizziness and unsteadiness are often blamed on the neck, but they have many possible causes, so the doctor assesses them carefully before linking them to the spine. Most patients are treated without surgery, with medicines, physiotherapy and exercises. Outside an acute episode a Naftalan course may be added if the resort physician allows it. We review your reports, send a written estimate and help with the visa, transfers and an interpreter.
Treatment options in Azerbaijan
Neurologist assessment and cervical spine MRI
A neurologist in Baku asks about your symptoms and examines the neck and the nerves that supply the arms. An MRI of the cervical spine is arranged when the symptoms or the examination give a reason, or when your previous scan is old.
MRI and CT scanPhysiotherapy and exercise for the neck
Physiotherapy, exercise therapy and attention to posture at work and at home are usually the main treatment. The programme is planned for you, medicines are added by the doctor when needed, and you leave with exercises to continue at home.
RehabilitationNaftalan course outside an acute episode
For chronic neck pain and stiffness, daily Naftalan procedures at a resort clinic for 10 to 14 days may be added once the acute pain has settled, if the resort physician allows it after an examination.
NaftalanSurgery for selected disc herniations
When a cervical disc herniation presses on a nerve root or on the spinal cord and weakness increases, or arm pain does not improve with proper treatment, a spine surgeon may discuss an operation after full tests.
Spine surgeryWhere treatment takes place
Who it may suit
- Adults with chronic neck pain and degenerative changes of the cervical spine on MRI or X-ray
- People with neck pain spreading to the shoulder or arm, or with tingling in the hand
- Patients with a cervical disc herniation who want a specialist plan or a second opinion before surgery
- People with neck stiffness and headaches at the back of the head outside an acute episode
- Patients who would like to combine physiotherapy with a Naftalan course, if the doctor allows it
When the trip should wait
- Sudden weakness or numbness in the arms or legs, problems with walking or balance, or loss of bladder control need urgent care at home, not a planned trip
- Neck pain after an injury, such as a fall or a car accident, must first be examined at the nearest hospital
- A sudden severe headache, especially with neck pain or vomiting, needs emergency care straight away
- Naftalan procedures are not prescribed for cancer, severe heart failure, blood disorders, acute infections or during pregnancy
The final decision is always made by the doctor after reviewing your documents.
Documents for the medical review
Send whatever you already have. If something is missing, the doctor will tell you what else is needed.

- Report from a neurologist or orthopedic surgeon
- A short description of your symptoms, such as pain in the arm, numbness, headaches or dizziness
- List of current medicines and previous treatment, such as physiotherapy, injections or surgery
- ECG and information about any heart, blood vessel or other chronic conditions

Frequently asked questions
How is cervical osteochondrosis treated?
Treatment is usually non-surgical. It may include short courses of medicines for pain, physiotherapy, exercises to strengthen the neck and shoulder muscles and advice on posture and the workplace, as the doctor decides. The aim is less pain and better movement, and the exercises are continued at home after the trip.
Can neck problems cause dizziness?
Dizziness has many possible causes, including the inner ear, blood pressure, heart rhythm, medicines and anxiety, and less often the blood vessels of the brain. Changes in the neck are very common on MRI, so the neurologist examines you carefully and may suggest other tests or specialists before linking dizziness to the spine. Sudden dizziness with weakness, speech problems or double vision needs emergency care.
When does a cervical disc herniation need surgery?
Surgery is usually discussed when there are signs of spinal cord compression, such as clumsy hands or an unsteady walk, when arm weakness increases, or when severe arm pain persists despite several weeks of proper treatment. The spine surgeon decides after examining you and reviewing the MRI. More details are on our spine surgery page.
Can I go to Naftalan with neck osteochondrosis?
A Naftalan course may be considered outside an acute episode, when the pain has settled, and only if the resort physician finds no contraindications. Some patients feel less pain and stiffness afterwards, although results vary. If an MRI shows compression of the spinal cord, a neurologist or spine surgeon should assess you first.
How long should I plan to stay?
A neurologist consultation with an MRI of the cervical spine usually takes one or two days, and a physiotherapy or Naftalan course usually lasts 10 to 14 days. The doctor confirms the exact length after the examination. We then send a written estimate, and you can also book an online consultation with a doctor before travelling.
