Myomectomy in Azerbaijan is an operation to remove uterine fibroids while keeping the uterus, carried out by gynaecologists at licensed clinics in Baku. Fibroids are benign growths in the muscle of the uterus, and many cause no trouble at all. Surgery is usually discussed when they lead to heavy periods, pain, pressure on the bladder or difficulty conceiving. Whether you need it, and which approach suits you, is decided by the gynaecologist.

The approach depends on the size, number and position of the fibroids. Nodes growing into the cavity of the uterus are usually removed by hysteroscopy, many others by laparoscopy, and very large or numerous fibroids may need open surgery. You send ultrasound or MRI reports, the gynaecologist gives a preliminary opinion and we prepare a written estimate. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic, and arranges transfers, accommodation and an interpreter.

Who it may suit

  • Women whose fibroids cause heavy or prolonged periods, sometimes with anaemia
  • Those with pelvic pain or pressure on the bladder or bowel caused by fibroids
  • Women who wish to keep the uterus, including those planning a pregnancy
  • Patients whose gynaecologist or fertility doctor advises removing a fibroid that affects the cavity of the uterus
  • Patients whose general health allows surgery under anaesthesia, as confirmed by the doctors

How the procedure is organised

  1. 1
    Review of your scans

You send pelvic ultrasound or MRI reports describing the size and position of each fibroid, recent blood tests and letters from your gynaecologist. The doctor gives a preliminary opinion, and we prepare a written cost estimate.

  2. 2
    Preparing for the trip

If heavy bleeding has led to anaemia, the doctor may advise correcting it first, for example with iron treatment prescribed at home, so that the operation is safer. We plan the dates with this in mind.

  3. 3
    Examination in Baku

The gynaecologist examines you and repeats the ultrasound, and you have blood tests and an anaesthetist assessment. The approach is agreed with you in advance, including what happens if the surgeon needs to change it during the operation.

  4. 4
    Surgery day

Laparoscopic and open myomectomy are done under general anaesthesia, and the wall of the uterus is repaired with stitches. Hysteroscopic removal is usually shorter and is done under sedation or general anaesthesia.

  5. 5
    Check before flying home

The doctor checks your recovery and the wounds and confirms when travel is safe. The removed tissue is sent for histological examination, and the result is shared with you.

  6. 6
    Follow-up and pregnancy planning

You receive a discharge summary in Russian or English. We pass your questions to the gynaecologist, who advises how long to wait before trying to conceive and what to tell your doctor at home.

What the cost depends on

The cost of myomectomy is calculated individually. It depends on the approach chosen, the number and size of the fibroids, the anaesthesia, the hospital stay and the tests needed beforehand. When the gynaecologist has reviewed your scans, we send you a written estimate before you travel. It lists what is included, so you can plan your budget in advance.

  • Approach and extent of the operation
  • Anaesthesia and the hospital stay
  • Tests and scans before surgery
  • Histological examination of the removed tissue
  • Accommodation for you and a companion

Recovery and the trip home

  • After hysteroscopic removal most women return to light activities within a few days, and after laparoscopy usually within two to four weeks.
  • Open myomectomy needs a longer recovery, often about four to six weeks, and lifting is avoided during this time.
  • Some spotting or discharge is common for a while, and the gynaecologist explains when sexual activity and exercise can resume.
  • Flying home is usually possible within several days to two weeks, depending on the approach, but the doctor decides and explains how to reduce the risk of blood clots.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better for me, laparoscopic or hysteroscopic myomectomy?

It depends on where the fibroids are. A node growing into the cavity of the uterus is usually removed by hysteroscopy through the cervix without any cuts, while fibroids in the wall or on the outer surface are often removed by laparoscopy. Very large or numerous fibroids may need open surgery. The gynaecologist decides after reviewing your ultrasound or MRI.

Can I become pregnant after myomectomy?

The aim of myomectomy is to keep the uterus, and many women plan a pregnancy afterwards. The gynaecologist advises how long to wait while the wall of the uterus heals and may give recommendations for a future pregnancy and birth. Tell the doctor about your plans before surgery. An online consultation with a doctor can also be booked before travelling.

How much does fibroid removal cost in Baku?

The cost depends on the approach, the number and size of the fibroids, the anaesthesia and the hospital stay. After the gynaecologist reviews your scans, we send you a written estimate before you travel, so you know in advance what is included.

Can fibroids come back after myomectomy?

Because the uterus is kept, new fibroids can develop over time, and small nodes that were not visible may grow. For this reason the gynaecologist usually recommends regular ultrasound checks at home. If symptoms return, the doctor discusses the next steps with you.

What if heavy bleeding has made me anaemic?

Anaemia is common with fibroids. The doctor may advise correcting it before a planned operation, for example with iron treatment, and the trip is planned when your blood tests allow. Very heavy bleeding with dizziness or fainting needs urgent care at home.
