Sanatoriums of Azerbaijan

Sanatoriums in Azerbaijan for children

Families usually consider two options. The speleotherapy centre at Duzdag runs courses for children with breathing problems, while resort sanatoriums in Naftalan accept a child only if the resort physician agrees. A parent or legal guardian always travels with the child. Below we explain how to choose a sanatorium in Azerbaijan for a child and how to prepare.

Sanatoriums in Azerbaijan for children

In brief

  • The speleotherapy centre at Duzdag runs courses for adults and for children with breathing conditions.
  • The centre physician sets the age rules, the course length and the session time for each child.
  • Naftalan is considered for a child only if the resort physician allows it, within the age limits of the resort.
  • A parent or legal guardian travels with the child and brings the consent documents that your country requires.

Which resorts in Azerbaijan accept children

Most family enquiries concern two places. The speleotherapy centre at Duzdag, inside a salt mountain about 14 km from the city of Nakhchivan, runs courses for both adults and children. Resort sanatoriums in Naftalan mainly work with adults, and a child is considered only when the resort physician agrees and the age limits of the particular resort allow it.

Neither option replaces regular care at home. A child with a long-term condition continues the treatment prescribed by the family doctor or specialist throughout the trip. Before anything is booked, we send the medical reports to the centre or resort physicians and wait for their answer, so that the family does not make a long journey in vain.

Duzdag for children with breathing problems

At Duzdag children spend time in the dry air of the salt caves under medical supervision. Families usually ask about it for asthma, chronic bronchitis or allergic rhinitis in a stable phase. The first 2 to 3 days are spent above ground for adaptation, and only then do the underground sessions begin. The centre physician decides on the minimum age, the number of sessions and how long each one lasts.

Speleotherapy is a supportive course. Inhalers, nasal sprays and other medicines continue exactly as the doctor at home prescribed, and the parent brings all of them, together with any spacer and written action plan. Results vary between children, and the course is postponed if the child has a cold, a fever or worsening breathing before departure.

Naftalan for children only with medical approval

Parents sometimes ask about Naftalan for a child with atopic dermatitis, eczema or joint problems. Such a course is possible only if the resort physician allows it after reviewing the reports and examining the child, and each resort sets its own age limits. If a programme is approved, it may be adapted for the child and differ from the usual adult course.

For skin conditions in children, a paediatric dermatologist should be the first point of contact, and a flare is treated before any resort course. We send the documents to the resort in advance, so you know whether a course is realistic before planning dates. If the answer is no, we explain the reasons and the other options.

Travelling with a parent or legal guardian

A child always travels with a parent or legal guardian, who stays with the child for the whole course and attends every examination. Rules on documents for minors differ between countries, so check the requirements of your own country and of the airline before booking. We help to prepare the list, but official advice comes from the relevant authorities.

  • Passports of the child and of the accompanying adult.
  • The birth certificate of the child.
  • Notarised consent of the second parent if your country requires it.
  • Documents confirming guardianship when the child travels with a guardian.
  • Medical reports, the vaccination record and a list of medicines.

Choosing dates around school

A course at Duzdag takes time. Adaptation alone lasts 2 to 3 days, and the centre physician sets the length of the course for the child, so families often plan the trip around school holidays. If the dates fall in term time, ask the school in advance about homework and how missed lessons will be covered after the return.

Leave a few days between the end of a busy school period and departure, so that any cold has time to show itself. Allow a quiet day after arrival and another one at home before school starts again. A tired child copes worse with adaptation and with the new daily routine at the centre.

What to pack for a child

Pack as you would for a longer stay away from home, with a little extra for the child. Medicines go in hand luggage rather than in checked bags, together with copies of prescriptions. A favourite toy, books or a tablet with downloaded films help on rest days and during the journey, especially for younger children.

  • All regular medicines, inhalers, a spacer and the action plan if the child has one.
  • Comfortable clothes and shoes, plus the items the centre recommends for underground sessions.
  • Skin creams prescribed by the doctor for children with eczema or dermatitis.
  • A thermometer and a fever medicine for children, as agreed with your paediatrician.
  • School books or tasks if the trip falls in term time.

Frequently asked questions

From what age can a child have a course at Duzdag?

The centre physician sets the age rules and decides individually after reviewing the reports and examining the child. We send the documents to the centre before you book, so that the family knows in advance whether a course is possible and roughly how long it is likely to take.

Is Naftalan suitable for children?

Naftalan resorts mainly treat adults. A course for a child is considered only if the resort physician allows it, and each resort has its own age limits. Skin and joint problems in children are first assessed by a paediatric specialist at home, and the resort decides after seeing the documents.

Can the accompanying parent have treatment too?

Sometimes this is possible. The parent is examined separately, and the resort or centre physician decides whether a course suits the adult as well. Let us know in advance, so that both programmes, the accommodation and the daily schedule can be planned together without clashes.

What if my child falls ill just before the trip?

With a fever, a cold or worsening breathing, procedures are not started, so the trip is usually postponed until the child has recovered and the doctor at home agrees. Tell us as soon as possible, and we will help to move the dates and the bookings.

How long should the family plan to stay?

At Duzdag the stay includes 2 to 3 days of adaptation above ground plus the course itself, whose length the centre physician sets for the child. Add the flight from Baku to Nakhchivan and a day of rest. For Naftalan, the resort physician sets the programme after the examination.

What does the cost depend on?

The cost depends on the resort or centre, the length of the course, accommodation for the child and the accompanying adult, flights within Azerbaijan and transfers. After the physicians review the documents, we send a written estimate before travel, so that the family can plan calmly.

This guide is for general information and does not replace a consultation with a doctor. The resort physician decides on any procedures.
