Treatment of benign prostate enlargement in Azerbaijan is carried out at licensed clinics in Baku by urologists. An enlarged prostate can make the urine stream weak, urination frequent and emptying incomplete, especially at night. When medicines no longer help or complications appear, the urologist may suggest TURP or laser enucleation or vaporisation, all performed through the urethra without cuts in the skin.

Before any operation prostate cancer has to be excluded, so the urologist first reviews your PSA results, ultrasound and urine flow tests. You send your reports, the doctor gives a preliminary opinion, and we prepare a written cost estimate before you travel. The plan is confirmed after examination in Baku. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic, so we organise transfers, accommodation and an interpreter and stay in touch after you return home.

Who it may suit

  • Men with benign prostate enlargement confirmed by a urologist
  • Those whose urinary symptoms disturb sleep and daily life despite medicines
  • Patients with urinary retention, repeated infections, bladder stones or bleeding linked to the prostate, after assessment
  • Men who would like to stop long-term medicines, if the doctor finds surgery suitable
  • Patients whose general health allows surgery under anaesthesia, as confirmed by the doctors

How the procedure is organised

  1. 1
    Review of your tests

You send PSA results, an ultrasound of the prostate, urine tests and reports from your urologist. The urologist gives a preliminary opinion, and we prepare a written cost estimate.

  2. 2
    Examination in Baku

After arrival the urologist examines you and may repeat the PSA test, the ultrasound and the urine flow measurement. If cancer cannot be excluded, MRI or a biopsy may be advised before any surgery is planned.

  3. 3
    Choosing the method

Depending on the size of the prostate and your health, the doctor may suggest TURP, laser enucleation or laser vaporisation. The urologist explains the expected effects, including possible changes in ejaculation.

  4. 4
    Surgery day

The operation is done through the urethra under spinal or general anaesthesia, as the anaesthetist decides. A urinary catheter is left in place for a short time afterwards.

  5. 5
Catheter removal and check before flying home

After the catheter is removed, the doctor checks that you pass urine well. Before the flight the urologist confirms that travelling is safe for you.

  6. 6
    Follow-up at home

You receive a discharge summary in Russian or English, and the result of the tissue examination is passed on when it is ready. We forward your questions to the urologist and can arrange remote consultations.

What the cost depends on

The cost of enlarged prostate treatment is calculated individually. It depends on the method, the size of the prostate, the type of anaesthesia, the hospital stay and the tests needed to exclude other conditions. After the urologist reviews your reports, we send you a written estimate before you travel, so you know in advance what is included.

  • The chosen method, TURP or laser surgery
  • Tests before surgery, such as PSA, ultrasound and urine flow
  • Anaesthesia and the hospital stay
  • Tissue examination after the operation
  • Accommodation for you and a companion
Get a written estimate You receive the estimate in writing before you book anything.

Recovery and the trip home

  • Some burning and frequent urination are common in the first weeks and usually ease gradually.
  • Small amounts of blood in the urine may appear for a few weeks, and drinking enough water helps.
  • Heavy lifting, straining, cycling and sexual activity are usually avoided for about four to six weeks, as the urologist advises.
  • Flying home is usually possible about a week after surgery, once the catheter is out and urination is stable, but the urologist decides.

Frequently asked questions

Is laser prostate surgery available in Baku?

Yes, laser enucleation and laser vaporisation are offered in some clinics in Baku alongside TURP. Whether a laser method suits you depends on the size of the prostate, your medicines and your general health. The urologist decides after the examination.

What is TURP?

TURP stands for transurethral resection of the prostate. The surgeon removes the excess tissue that narrows the urethra with an instrument passed through it, so there are no cuts in the skin. It is a long established method, and the removed tissue is sent for examination.

How much does enlarged prostate treatment cost in Baku?

The cost depends on the method, the size of the prostate, the anaesthesia, the hospital stay and the tests you need. After the urologist reviews your reports, we send you a written estimate before you travel. This way you know in advance what is included.

Why are PSA tests needed before surgery?

The PSA test and the examination help to exclude prostate cancer, which is treated differently. If the PSA is raised, MRI or a biopsy may be needed first, and this can change the plan. For this reason we ask you to send your results early.

Will the operation affect sexual function?

After TURP and laser surgery many men notice that little or no semen comes out at orgasm, which is called retrograde ejaculation. Problems with erection are less common but possible. The urologist discusses your individual risks before you decide.
