Procedure in Azerbaijan
Thyroid surgery in Azerbaijan
Removal of part or all of the thyroid gland, planned after a surgeon and an endocrinologist review your ultrasound and biopsy results.
Typical figures. The exact plan is confirmed by the treating doctor after the medical review.
Thyroid surgery in Azerbaijan is carried out at licensed clinics in Baku by surgeons who work together with endocrinologists. Depending on the findings, the surgeon removes one lobe of the gland or the whole thyroid. The operation may be considered for nodules with a suspicious biopsy result, a large goitre that presses on the windpipe or gullet, or some forms of overactive thyroid. The doctors decide whether surgery is needed.
Everything starts with your documents. You send a recent thyroid ultrasound, hormone tests and the result of a fine-needle biopsy, the surgeon gives a preliminary opinion, and we send you a written cost estimate before you book anything. The final plan is confirmed only after an examination in Baku. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic, so we organise transfers, accommodation and an interpreter and stay in touch after you return home.
Who it may suit
- People with a thyroid nodule whose biopsy result is suspicious or unclear
- Patients with a large goitre that causes pressure in the neck or difficulty swallowing or breathing
- Some patients with an overactive thyroid when medicines are not suitable or have not helped
- People whose endocrinologist at home has recommended surgery and who would like a surgeon's opinion
- Patients whose general health allows surgery under anaesthesia, as confirmed by the doctors
How the procedure is organised
-
1
Review of your results
You send the thyroid ultrasound, hormone tests such as TSH and the cytology report from the fine-needle biopsy. The surgeon gives a preliminary opinion, and we prepare a written cost estimate so that you can decide calmly.
-
2
Consultation and tests in Baku
After arrival the surgeon and an endocrinologist examine you, and the ultrasound or tests may be repeated if needed. An ENT doctor usually checks the vocal cords, and you have blood tests, an ECG and an anaesthetist assessment.
-
3
Surgery day
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia through a small incision at the front of the neck. The surgeon confirms how much of the gland will be removed only after the examination.
-
4
First days in hospital
The team checks your voice and swallowing and measures calcium levels, because the small glands that control calcium lie next to the thyroid. Most patients eat and walk on the first day.
-
5
Results and check before flying home
The removed tissue is sent for histology, and the result usually takes several days. Before the flight the surgeon checks the wound and confirms that travelling is safe for you.
-
6
Follow-up at home
You receive a discharge summary in Russian or English with the histology and medication plan. Further follow-up continues with your endocrinologist at home, and we pass your questions to the surgeon.
What the cost depends on
The cost of thyroid surgery is calculated individually and depends on how much of the gland is removed, the clinic, the length of the hospital stay and the tests you need, including histology. Once the surgeon has reviewed your documents, we send you a written estimate before you travel. It shows what is included, so you can plan your budget in advance.
- Extent of the operation, one lobe or the whole gland
- The clinic and the surgical team
- Length of the hospital stay
- Tests and consultations before surgery, including the endocrinologist and ENT doctor
- Histology of the removed tissue and accommodation for a companion
Recovery and the trip home
- The neck may feel stiff and swallowing may be a little uncomfortable for a few days, and most people return to light daily activities within about a week or two.
- A hoarse or tired voice is fairly common at first and usually improves over the following weeks, but tell the doctor about any lasting change.
- Tingling around the lips or in the fingers can be a sign of low calcium and should be reported straight away, as the doctor may prescribe calcium and vitamin D for a while.
- After removal of the whole gland, thyroid hormone tablets are needed for life, and the dose is adjusted by your endocrinologist at home through regular blood tests.

Frequently asked questions
How much does thyroid surgery cost in Azerbaijan?
The cost depends on the extent of the operation, the clinic, the hospital stay and the tests you need. After the surgeon reviews your ultrasound, hormone tests and biopsy result, we send you a written estimate before you travel. This way you know in advance what is included.
Do I need a biopsy before surgery?
In most cases yes. For nodules the surgeon usually needs the cytology result from a fine-needle biopsy to plan the extent of the operation. If you have not had one, it can be arranged in Baku before the decision, which may add a few days to your stay.
Will I have to take hormones for life?
After removal of the whole thyroid gland, hormone replacement tablets are needed for life. After removal of one lobe, the remaining part often produces enough hormone, but this is checked with blood tests. Your endocrinologist at home sets and adjusts the dose.
How long do I need to stay in Azerbaijan?
Most patients stay about 7 to 10 days. This covers the consultation and tests, the operation, one to three days in hospital and a check before the flight. The surgeon decides when you are ready to travel.
Can I have an online consultation before travelling?
Yes. You can book an online consultation with a doctor before the trip, discuss your results and ask about the operation. If radioactive iodine or other further treatment may be needed later, the endocrinologist explains whether it is needed and where it can be done.
