Hernia repair in Azerbaijan is carried out at licensed clinics in Baku by general surgeons. A hernia forms when tissue pushes through a weak spot in the abdominal wall, most often in the groin, at the navel or along an old surgical scar. It does not heal on its own, and the surgeon decides whether and when an operation is needed.

Most hernias are repaired with a synthetic mesh that strengthens the abdominal wall, either laparoscopically through small incisions or through an open incision. The surgeon chooses the method after examining you. You send your reports and ultrasound first, we send a written cost estimate before you travel, and we organise transfers, accommodation and an interpreter and stay in touch after you return home.

Who it may suit

  • People with an inguinal hernia that causes a bulge, discomfort or pain
  • Patients with an umbilical hernia or a hernia near the navel
  • People with a ventral or incisional hernia after previous abdominal surgery
  • Patients whose hernia has come back after an earlier repair
  • Patients whose general health allows surgery under anaesthesia, as confirmed by the doctors

How the procedure is organised

  1. 1
    Review of your reports

You send an ultrasound of the hernia area and your medical reports, and the surgeon gives a preliminary opinion. We then prepare a written cost estimate so that you can decide calmly.

  2. 2
    Examination and tests in Baku

After arrival the surgeon examines the hernia, and you have blood tests, an ECG and an anaesthetist assessment. The surgeon confirms the method and the type of mesh only after this examination.

  3. 3
    Surgery day

The operation is performed under general, spinal or sometimes local anaesthesia, as the doctors decide. An interpreter is available, and we keep your family informed if you wish.

  4. 4
    After the operation

Most patients walk within a few hours and go home on the same day or after one or two nights. The team controls pain and explains how to care for the wounds.

  5. 5
    Check before flying home

A few days after surgery the surgeon checks the wounds and confirms that travelling is safe for you. You receive advice on lifting and physical activity for the coming weeks.

  6. 6
    Follow-up at home

You receive a discharge summary in Russian or English. We pass your questions to the surgeon and can arrange remote follow-up consultations, while stitches, if any, can usually be removed by a local doctor.

What the cost depends on

The cost of hernia repair is calculated individually and depends on the type and size of the hernia, the method, the mesh, the clinic and the length of the hospital stay. Once the surgeon has reviewed your documents, we send you a written estimate before you travel. It shows what is included, so you can plan your budget in advance.

  • Type and size of the hernia
  • Laparoscopic or open method and the type of mesh
  • The clinic and the surgical team
  • Length of the hospital stay
  • Tests and consultations before surgery

Recovery and the trip home

  • Walking is encouraged from the first day, and light daily activities are usually possible within one to two weeks.
  • Heavy lifting and intense exercise are usually avoided for about four to six weeks, as the surgeon advises.
  • Some discomfort, swelling or bruising around the wound is common in the first days and gradually settles.
  • Flying home is usually possible a few days after surgery, but the surgeon decides when it is safe for you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does inguinal hernia repair cost in Azerbaijan?

The cost depends on the type and size of the hernia, the method, the mesh and the hospital stay. After the surgeon reviews your documents, we send you a written estimate before you travel. This way you know in advance what is included.

Is laparoscopic or open repair better for me?

Both methods are widely used. Laparoscopy is often chosen for hernias on both sides or for a hernia that returned after open repair, while open repair may suit other cases or patients who should avoid general anaesthesia. The surgeon recommends the method after examining you.

How long do I need to stay in Azerbaijan?

Most patients stay about five to seven days. This covers the examination and tests, the operation and a wound check before the flight home. The surgeon confirms when it is safe for you to travel.

When should I not wait for a planned trip?

If the hernia suddenly becomes painful, hard or cannot be pushed back, or if you have vomiting and bloating, it may be strangulated. This needs emergency care at the nearest hospital, not a planned trip abroad.

Is the mesh safe?

Mesh repair is a standard method that lowers the risk of the hernia coming back. Like any implant, it may rarely cause problems such as infection or long-lasting pain. The surgeon explains these risks before the operation and answers your questions.
