Gastroscopy in Baku is carried out at licensed clinics by gastroenterologists and endoscopy specialists. A slim flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth to examine the oesophagus, the stomach and the first part of the small intestine. It is usually advised for persistent heartburn, upper abdominal pain, a suspected ulcer or to check for Helicobacter pylori. The doctor decides whether the examination is needed after reviewing your complaints.

During the examination the doctor may take small tissue samples for a biopsy or a Helicobacter test. Sedation may be offered for comfort, and the doctor decides whether it suits you. Before the trip we review your reports and send a written cost estimate, then organise transfers, accommodation and an interpreter. If the doctor agrees, a colonoscopy can be done on the same day. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic.

Who it may suit

  • People with heartburn, a sour taste or belching that lasts for weeks despite treatment
  • Those with pain or discomfort in the upper abdomen that keeps coming back
  • Patients whose doctor wants to check for an ulcer, gastritis or Helicobacter pylori
  • People who need a repeat examination of a known stomach or oesophagus condition
  • Those who would like gastroscopy and colonoscopy during one trip, if the doctor agrees

How the procedure is organised

  1. 1
    Review of your complaints

You send a description of your symptoms, earlier reports and a list of medicines. A doctor confirms whether gastroscopy is advisable, and we prepare a written cost estimate. Vomiting blood, black stools or sudden severe pain need urgent care where you live, and the trip must wait.

  2. 2
    Preparation

The clinic tells you how long to go without food and drink before the examination. Please tell the doctor in advance about blood thinners, diabetes medicines and stomach medicines, as they may need specific advice. Do not stop any medicine on your own.

  3. 3
    Consultation on the day

The doctor asks about your symptoms, explains the examination and its possible risks, and you sign the consent form. The throat is usually numbed with a spray, and sedation may be offered if the doctor considers it suitable.

  4. 4
    The examination

You lie on your side while the doctor gently guides the endoscope through the mouth, which usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. Small samples for a biopsy or a Helicobacter test may be taken, and this is usually painless.

  5. 5
    Report and biopsy results

Straight after the examination the doctor describes what was seen and gives you a written report. Biopsy results come from the laboratory some days later and may arrive after you fly home, in which case the doctor explains them online.

  6. 6
    Follow-up at home

You receive the report in Russian or English for your own doctor. If treatment is needed, the doctor explains the plan, and we pass your further questions to the clinic.

What the cost depends on

The cost of gastroscopy depends on whether sedation is used, whether a biopsy and a Helicobacter test are taken, and whether a consultation or a colonoscopy is added. After a doctor reviews your request, we send a written estimate before you travel. It lists the examination, the report and the laboratory work, so you know in advance what is included.

  • Sedation, if the doctor considers it suitable
  • Biopsy, a Helicobacter test and laboratory examination of the samples
  • Consultation with a gastroenterologist before and after the examination
  • A colonoscopy on the same day, if it is planned
  • Transfers, an interpreter and accommodation
Get a written estimate You receive the estimate in writing before you book anything.

Recovery and the trip home

  • The numbness in the throat usually wears off within about an hour, and the staff tell you when you can drink and eat again.
  • A mild sore throat or bloating is common for a day and usually passes by itself, while severe pain, fever, black stools or vomiting blood need urgent medical help.
  • After sedation you must not drive for the rest of that day, so it is advisable to come with a companion who can take you back to your hotel.
  • Flying home is usually possible the next day if you feel well, as the doctor confirms, and biopsy results can be discussed online later.

Frequently asked questions

How much does gastroscopy cost in Baku?

The cost depends on sedation, a biopsy, a Helicobacter test and any consultations or colonoscopy added. After a doctor reviews your request, we send a written estimate before you travel, so you know in advance what is included.

Can gastroscopy be done under sedation?

Sedation may be offered to make the examination more comfortable. The doctor decides whether it suits you after asking about your health, heart and lungs and the medicines you take. After sedation you must not drive that day, and it is advisable to have a companion with you.

How should I prepare for gastroscopy?

The clinic tells you how many hours to go without food and drink beforehand. Tell the doctor in advance about all your medicines, especially blood thinners and diabetes medicines, and do not stop any of them without medical advice. If a colonoscopy is planned on the same day, you receive separate bowel preparation instructions.

When will I get the biopsy results if I fly home?

Biopsy results usually take some days, and they may arrive after you are back home. The doctor then explains them in an online consultation, and the written result is sent to you in Russian or English. We stay in touch until you have the answer.

Can gastroscopy and colonoscopy be done on the same day?

Often yes, if the doctor agrees. Both examinations can be arranged one after the other, which saves time on the trip. The doctor decides on sedation and gives you instructions for both, and you can book an online consultation before travelling to discuss the plan.
