A colonoscopy in Baku is an examination of the large bowel with a thin flexible tube and a camera, carried out by a gastroenterologist or endoscopist at a licensed clinic. It is often advised for rectal bleeding, changes in bowel habits, abdominal pain, anaemia or a family history of bowel disease, and as a screening test from a certain age. If the doctor finds polyps, they can often be removed during the same procedure.

You send your reports and a list of your medicines, a doctor reviews them, and we send a written cost estimate before you travel. Sedation may be offered to make the procedure more comfortable, and the doctor decides whether it suits you. Any removed polyps are sent for histology. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic, so we organise transfers, a hotel near the clinic and an interpreter, and stay in touch afterwards.

Who it may suit

  • People with blood in the stool or bleeding from the rectum, after a doctor has assessed them
  • Those with a lasting change in bowel habits, abdominal pain or anaemia without a clear cause
  • Adults of screening age, or younger people with a family history of bowel polyps or bowel cancer, as the doctor advises
  • Patients who have had polyps removed before and need a follow-up colonoscopy
  • People who want to combine a colonoscopy with a gastroscopy or a check-up in one trip

How the procedure is organised

  1. 1
    Review of your documents

You describe your symptoms and send your reports, earlier colonoscopy results if you have them and a list of your medicines. A doctor gives a preliminary opinion, and we prepare a written cost estimate so that you can decide calmly.

  2. 2
    Consultation in Baku

The doctor asks about your health, explains the procedure and reviews your medicines. Blood thinners, iron tablets and diabetes medicines sometimes need adjusting, and only the doctor decides this. Please do not stop any medicine on your own.

  3. 3
    Bowel preparation the day before

You follow a light diet and drink a laxative solution exactly as instructed. It is best to plan this day in your hotel near a toilet. Good preparation matters, because the doctor needs a clear view of the bowel wall.

  4. 4
    Procedure day

The examination usually takes less than an hour. Sedation may be offered, and the doctor decides whether it suits you. If polyps are found, they can often be removed at once and sent for histology. An interpreter is with you if needed.

  5. 5
    Results and check before flying

The doctor explains what was seen on the same day and gives you a written report. Histology results usually follow in several working days. After polyp removal the doctor advises when flying is safe, because a small risk of delayed bleeding remains for some days.

  6. 6
    Follow-up at home

You receive the report in Russian or English. We pass on the histology results when they are ready, and the doctor advises when a repeat colonoscopy is due. A remote consultation can be arranged if you have questions.

What the cost depends on

The cost of a colonoscopy depends on the clinic, whether sedation is used, whether polyps are removed, the number of samples sent for histology and any tests needed beforehand. After a doctor reviews your documents, we send you a written estimate before you travel. It shows what is included and what may be added if polyps are removed during the procedure.

  • Sedation, if you and the doctor choose it
  • Removal of polyps, if they are found
  • Histology of the removed tissue
  • Gastroscopy in the same session, if planned
  • Accommodation, transfers and an interpreter

Recovery and the trip home

  • Sedation means no driving and no important decisions on the day of the procedure, and it helps to have someone with you until the evening.
  • Mild bloating and cramps from the air used during the examination usually settle within a few hours.
  • After polyp removal the doctor may ask you to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for a few days and explains when to restart any medicines that were paused.
  • Flying home is often possible within a day or two, but after polyp removal the doctor decides. Rectal bleeding with dizziness or severe abdominal pain needs urgent medical care.

Frequently asked questions

Is colonoscopy under sedation possible in Baku?

Sedation may be offered so that you are drowsy or lightly asleep and feel little discomfort. Whether it suits you depends on your health, and the doctor decides, together with an anaesthetist if needed. After sedation you must not drive for the rest of the day.

How do I prepare for a colonoscopy?

The day before, you follow a light diet and drink a laxative solution as instructed, so it is best to stay in your hotel near a toilet. The doctor tells you in advance which of your medicines to continue. Please do not stop blood thinners or other medicines on your own.

What happens if polyps are found?

Polyps can often be removed during the same procedure and are sent for histology, with results usually ready in several working days. The doctor explains the findings and when a repeat colonoscopy is due. Large or complex polyps may need a separate plan, which the doctor discusses with you.

Can I have a gastroscopy at the same time?

Yes, a gastroscopy and a colonoscopy are often done in one session under the same sedation, if the doctor finds this suitable. This saves time and usually does not add days to your stay. We include both in the estimate if you plan them together.

How much does a colonoscopy in Baku cost?

The cost depends on the clinic, sedation, polyp removal and histology. After a doctor reviews your documents, we send a written estimate before you travel. Many doctors in Azerbaijan speak Russian, and an interpreter is available if needed.
