Rehabilitation after joint replacement in Azerbaijan takes place at rehabilitation centres in Baku, where a rehabilitation doctor and physiotherapists work with you on movement, strength and walking. It can follow straight after knee or hip replacement in Baku, or you can come later for a structured programme after surgery done in your own country. The programme is always set after an examination.

If you had surgery at home, we ask for the operation report, recent X-rays and your surgeon's restrictions, and the rehabilitation doctor gives a preliminary opinion. We then send a written cost estimate before you book anything. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic, so we organise transfers, accommodation and an interpreter and stay in touch after you return home.

Who it may suit

  • Patients who have knee or hip replacement in Baku and want to continue physiotherapy before flying home
  • People who had joint replacement at home and would like an intensive rehabilitation course
  • Those whose walking, stair climbing or joint movement is recovering more slowly than expected
  • Patients who need help with daily activities and confidence after surgery
  • People whose surgeon has confirmed that active rehabilitation is allowed

How the procedure is organised

  1. 1
    Review of your documents

You send the operation report, recent X-rays and your surgeon's restrictions, or we receive them from the Baku surgeon if you had surgery here. The rehabilitation doctor gives a preliminary opinion, and we prepare a written cost estimate.

  2. 2
    Examination at the rehabilitation centre

After arrival the rehabilitation doctor checks the wound or scar, the range of movement, muscle strength and walking. The goals and the programme are agreed with you after this examination.

  3. 3
    Daily physiotherapy

Sessions with a physiotherapist usually include exercises for bending and straightening the joint, strengthening the muscles and balance. Some patients also have hydrotherapy once the wound has fully healed, if the doctor allows it.

  4. 4
    Walking and everyday skills

You practise walking with crutches or a cane, climbing stairs and getting in and out of a bed, chair or car safely, following the movement rules set by your surgeon.

  5. 5
    Check before flying home

At the end of the programme the rehabilitation doctor reviews your progress and confirms that travelling is safe for you. Advice on preventing blood clots during the flight is part of this check.

  6. 6
    Exercise programme for home

You receive a discharge summary in Russian or English and a written exercise plan. We pass your questions to the rehabilitation doctor and can arrange remote follow-up consultations.

What the cost depends on

The cost of rehabilitation is calculated individually and depends on the rehabilitation centre, the length of the programme, the number of sessions per day and the type of accommodation. Once the rehabilitation doctor has reviewed your documents, we send you a written estimate before you travel. It shows what is included, so you can plan your budget in advance.

  • The rehabilitation centre and the specialists involved
  • Length of the programme
  • Number and type of sessions per day
  • Consultations and any additional tests
  • Accommodation for you and a companion

Recovery and the trip home

  • Most patients move from crutches or a walker to a cane over the first weeks, at a pace set by the surgeon and rehabilitation doctor.
  • Exercises continue at home for several months, and keeping to them matters as much as the course itself.
  • Many people return to everyday activities in about three months, while the joint may keep improving for up to a year.
  • A Naftalan resort course is not used straight after surgery. It may be discussed only at a later stage, once the wound has healed, and only if your treating doctor allows it.

Frequently asked questions

How soon after surgery can I come for rehabilitation?

If you had surgery in Baku, rehabilitation usually starts in hospital and continues straight after discharge. If you had surgery at home, the right time depends on the wound, your general health and your surgeon's advice, and the rehabilitation doctor confirms it after reviewing your documents.

How long is a rehabilitation programme?

Most programmes last about two to three weeks with sessions on most days. The rehabilitation doctor sets the length and intensity after the examination, depending on your progress and goals.

Can I go to Naftalan after joint replacement?

Not straight after surgery. A Naftalan resort course may be discussed only at a later stage, when the wound has fully healed, and only if your treating doctor allows it. It does not replace physiotherapy and is not a treatment for the implant itself.

How much does rehabilitation cost?

The cost depends on the centre, the length of the programme, the number of sessions and the accommodation. After reviewing your documents we send a written estimate that lists everything included, so you can decide before booking.

Can a relative come with me?

Yes, and many patients prefer to travel with a relative. We can arrange accommodation for your companion and include it in the estimate. A companion is especially helpful while you are still walking with support.
