ICSI in Azerbaijan is performed in the embryology laboratories of licensed fertility clinics in Baku as one stage of IVF. Instead of mixing eggs and sperm in a dish, the embryologist injects a single sperm into each mature egg. The reproductive specialist usually considers it when sperm quality is low, when eggs did not fertilise in an earlier cycle, or when frozen or surgically retrieved sperm will be used.

The rest of the programme follows the usual IVF steps, so both partners take part. For a fresh cycle the woman usually spends about 2 to 3 weeks in Baku and her partner a few days around egg retrieval, and the doctor confirms the calendar. We send your tests to the treating doctor in advance and prepare a written estimate. As a coordinator, not a clinic, we arrange the visa, transfers, accommodation and an interpreter.

Who it may suit

  • Couples with a low sperm count, reduced motility or abnormal sperm shape in the semen analysis
  • Couples whose eggs did not fertilise or fertilised poorly in a previous IVF cycle
  • Men whose sperm was frozen earlier, for example before cancer treatment
  • Men with no sperm in the ejaculate, when sperm can be retrieved surgically
  • Couples for whom the reproductive specialist recommends ICSI after reviewing the tests

How the procedure is organised

  1. 1
Review of tests for both partners

You send the woman's hormone tests and ultrasound report and the man's semen analysis. The reproductive specialist reviews them, says which tests are missing and whether ICSI may be suitable, and explains which programmes are available under Azerbaijani law and the clinic's rules. We then prepare a written estimate.

  2. 2
    Stimulation and monitoring

The woman receives hormone injections, usually for about 10 to 14 days, so that several eggs mature. Monitoring with ultrasound and blood tests may start at home with a local doctor if the clinic agrees, and continues in Baku.

  3. 3
    Egg retrieval and sperm preparation

Eggs are collected with a thin needle under ultrasound guidance, usually under sedation, and the woman goes home the same day. On that day the partner gives a sperm sample, or frozen or surgically retrieved sperm is prepared in the laboratory.

  4. 4
    ICSI in the laboratory

Under a microscope the embryologist selects sperm and injects one into each mature egg. The next day the clinic tells you how fertilisation went. Not every egg fertilises, and the embryologist explains the results.

  5. 5
    Embryo culture, transfer or freezing

Embryos develop in the laboratory for several days. The doctor then transfers an embryo to the uterus in a short procedure that usually needs no anaesthesia, or recommends freezing the embryos for a later transfer.

  6. 6
    Return home and follow-up

You receive a report on the cycle in Russian or English. A pregnancy test is usually taken at home about two weeks after transfer, and we pass the result and your questions to the doctor.

What the cost depends on

The cost of ICSI is calculated individually, because it is part of a full IVF programme. It depends on the stimulation protocol and medicines, the laboratory methods, whether embryos are frozen and the length of stay for both partners. After the doctor reviews your tests, we send a written estimate before you travel that shows what is included and which items depend on how the cycle goes.

  • Stimulation protocol and medicines
  • ICSI and other laboratory methods
  • Embryo freezing and storage, if needed
  • Tests and consultations for both partners
  • Accommodation for the time in Baku

Recovery and the trip home

  • Most women return to everyday activities a day or two after egg retrieval, although mild pain or bloating is common.
  • Severe abdominal pain, marked swelling or shortness of breath after retrieval should be reported to the clinic straight away, as these may be signs of ovarian hyperstimulation.
  • After the transfer, heavy physical exertion is usually avoided for a short time, and the doctor explains which medicines to take and for how long.
  • Flying home is usually possible a day or two after transfer, but the doctor decides when travel is suitable for you.

Frequently asked questions

When is ICSI recommended instead of standard IVF?

It is usually considered when the semen analysis shows few sperm or reduced motility, when eggs did not fertilise in a previous cycle, or when frozen or surgically retrieved sperm is used. The reproductive specialist decides after reviewing the tests of both partners.

How long do we need to stay in Baku for ICSI?

For a fresh cycle the woman usually stays about 2 to 3 weeks, from monitoring of stimulation to embryo transfer. Her partner usually needs to be in Baku for a few days around egg retrieval. Monitoring may begin at home if the clinic agrees, and the doctor confirms the calendar.

Is ICSI possible with male infertility?

ICSI is one of the options a reproductive specialist may consider when there is a male factor, because only one sperm is needed for each egg. If there are no sperm in the ejaculate, a urologist may discuss surgical retrieval. The plan depends on the tests of both partners, and no one can promise a pregnancy.

Does the doctor speak Russian?

Many doctors in Azerbaijan speak Russian. If needed, an interpreter joins you at consultations and procedures, and the cycle report can be issued in Russian or English. Before travelling you can also book an online consultation with a doctor.

How much does ICSI in Baku cost?

ICSI is priced as part of the full IVF programme, so the cost depends on the protocol, medicines, laboratory methods, embryo freezing and the stay of both partners. After the doctor reviews your tests, we send a written estimate before you travel.
