Glaucoma treatment in Azerbaijan
Diagnostics, laser and surgical treatment of glaucoma to lower eye pressure and protect the optic nerve.
Typical figures. The exact plan is confirmed by the treating doctor after the medical review.
Glaucoma treatment in Azerbaijan is provided at licensed eye clinics in Baku by ophthalmologists. Glaucoma gradually damages the optic nerve, often without pain. Treatment aims to lower eye pressure and slow or stop further loss of vision. It cannot restore vision that has already been lost, which is why early diagnosis and regular monitoring matter so much. The ophthalmologist chooses the method after examination.
If you are considering glaucoma treatment abroad, everything starts with your documents. You send previous eye examinations, pressure readings and visual field tests, the doctor gives a preliminary opinion and we prepare a written estimate. Treatment may involve drops, laser or surgery. Sudden eye pain with redness and blurred vision is an emergency and needs care at home immediately. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic, and organises transfers and an interpreter.
Who it may suit
- People with diagnosed open-angle or angle-closure glaucoma
- Patients whose eye pressure stays high despite drops
- Those who tolerate drops poorly or find it hard to use them regularly
- People with a narrow drainage angle found during an eye examination
- Patients with suspected glaucoma who want a full diagnostic assessment
How the procedure is organised
-
1
Review of your eye tests
You send previous examinations, eye pressure readings, visual field tests and OCT results, if you have them. The ophthalmologist gives a preliminary opinion, and we prepare a written estimate.
-
2
Full diagnostics in Baku
The doctor measures eye pressure and corneal thickness, examines the drainage angle and the optic nerve, and repeats the visual field test and OCT. The treatment plan is confirmed after this.
-
3
Laser treatment
For open-angle glaucoma laser trabeculoplasty may improve fluid outflow from the eye. For a narrow angle a laser iridotomy creates a tiny opening in the iris. Both are usually done without a hospital stay.
-
4
Surgery when needed
If drops and laser do not control the pressure, the surgeon may suggest trabeculectomy or a drainage device. These are usually performed under local anaesthesia, sometimes together with cataract surgery.
-
5
Check-ups before flying home
After laser treatment the pressure is checked within hours or days. After surgery check-ups are more frequent in the first week, and the doctor confirms when you can fly.
-
6
Lifelong monitoring at home
Glaucoma needs regular monitoring for life. You receive a discharge summary in Russian or English and a drop schedule, and we pass your questions to the ophthalmologist.
What the cost depends on
The cost of glaucoma treatment is calculated individually. It depends on the diagnostics needed, on whether laser treatment or surgery is chosen, on a drainage device if one is used and on the number of check-ups. After the ophthalmologist reviews your documents, we send a written estimate before you travel, so you can plan your budget in advance.
- Scope of the diagnostics
- Laser treatment or the type of surgery
- Drainage device, if needed
- Number of check-ups and accommodation
Recovery and the trip home
- After laser treatment most people return to normal activities within a day or two and may use drops for a short time.
- After surgery vision may be blurred for several weeks, and eye drops are used exactly as prescribed.
- Heavy lifting, bending and rubbing the eye are avoided in the first weeks, as the doctor advises.
- Eye pressure and the optic nerve need checking for life, so regular visits to an ophthalmologist at home remain essential.

Frequently asked questions
How much does glaucoma treatment cost in Baku?
The cost depends on the diagnostics, on whether laser treatment or surgery is needed and on the number of check-ups. After the ophthalmologist reviews your documents, we send a written estimate before you travel, so you know in advance what is included.
Can treatment restore vision lost to glaucoma?
Unfortunately not. Damage to the optic nerve cannot be reversed, so treatment aims to preserve the vision you still have. This is why it is important not to delay diagnosis and to keep using the prescribed treatment.
Is surgery always needed for glaucoma?
No. Many patients keep their eye pressure under control with drops or laser treatment. Surgery is usually considered when these methods are not enough or are poorly tolerated. The ophthalmologist decides after a full examination.
How long do I need to stay in Azerbaijan?
For diagnostics and laser treatment the stay is usually three to five days. After surgery it is usually about one to two weeks because of the check-ups. The doctor confirms when you can fly home.
Does the doctor speak Russian?
Many doctors in Azerbaijan speak Russian. If needed, an interpreter joins your consultations. Before travelling you can also have an online consultation with the ophthalmologist.
