Heart surgery in Azerbaijan is carried out at licensed clinics in Baku by cardiac surgeons working as part of a cardiac team. Coronary artery bypass grafting creates new routes for blood around narrowed heart arteries, using vessels taken from the chest, leg or arm. Valve surgery repairs a damaged valve or replaces it with a mechanical or biological prosthesis. The team decides which operation is appropriate for you after examination.

This is major surgery with a longer stay, so we strongly recommend travelling with a companion. You send your angiography, echocardiography and reports, the cardiac team gives a preliminary opinion and we prepare a written estimate. Urgent cases are treated at home without delay, and a trip is planned only when your condition is stable. MedAzerbaijan is a coordinator, not a clinic, and organises transfers, accommodation and an interpreter.

Who it may suit

  • People with narrowing of several heart arteries or of the left main artery, confirmed on angiography
  • Patients for whom the cardiac team considers bypass more suitable than stenting
  • People with a narrowed or leaking heart valve that causes symptoms or affects heart function
  • Those whose cardiologist at home has recommended heart surgery and who want a further opinion
  • Patients whose condition is stable enough to travel, as confirmed by the doctors

How the procedure is organised

  1. 1
    Review by the cardiac team

You send coronary angiography, echocardiography and your reports. The cardiologist and cardiac surgeon assess whether surgery, stenting or medicines suit you best, and we prepare a written estimate.

  2. 2
    Examination in Baku

You have blood tests, an ECG, echocardiography, a scan of the neck arteries and other checks, and the anaesthetist assesses you. Before valve surgery the teeth are checked for infection. The plan is confirmed after this.

  3. 3
    Surgery day

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes several hours. An interpreter is available, and we keep your family informed if you wish.

  4. 4
    Intensive care and ward

The first one or two days are usually spent in intensive care. Then you move to the ward, start breathing exercises and walking, and the team monitors your heart and wounds every day.

  5. 5
Rehabilitation and check before flying home

After discharge you gradually increase activity under supervision. Before the flight the doctors check your condition, ECG and echocardiography and confirm that travelling is safe.

  6. 6
    Follow-up at home

You receive a detailed discharge summary in Russian or English and a medicine plan for your cardiologist at home. We pass your questions to the team and can arrange remote follow-up consultations.

What the cost depends on

The cost of heart surgery is calculated individually. It depends on the type of operation, the valve prosthesis if one is needed, the length of the intensive care and hospital stay, and the tests before surgery. After the cardiac team reviews your documents, we send a written estimate before you travel, so your family can plan in advance.

  • Type of operation
  • Valve prosthesis, if needed
  • Intensive care and hospital stay
  • Tests and consultations before surgery
  • Cardiac rehabilitation and accommodation for a companion
Get a written estimate You receive the estimate in writing before you book anything.

Recovery and the trip home

  • The breastbone usually needs about two to three months to heal, so lifting, pushing and driving are limited during this time.
  • Walking is increased gradually, and cardiac rehabilitation helps restore strength and confidence.
  • After a mechanical valve, blood thinning medicines are taken for life with regular blood tests, and other medicines are prescribed by the team.
  • Flying home is usually possible about two to three weeks after surgery if recovery goes smoothly, and the doctors decide.

Frequently asked questions

How much does heart bypass surgery cost in Baku?

The cost depends on the type of operation, a valve prosthesis if needed, the intensive care and hospital stay and the tests. After the cardiac team reviews your documents, we send a written estimate before you travel, so you know in advance what is included.

How long do I need to stay in Azerbaijan?

Usually three to four weeks. This covers the examination, surgery, intensive care, the ward stay and the first stage of rehabilitation with a check before the flight. The doctors decide when travelling is safe for you.

Should a relative come with me?

We strongly recommend it. After heart surgery support is needed in the first weeks, both in the clinic and after discharge. We can arrange accommodation for your companion near the clinic and include it in the estimate.

Does a damaged heart valve always need replacement?

Not always. Some valves, especially the mitral valve, can often be repaired. Whether repair, replacement or a less invasive procedure suits you depends on the valve, your age and your general health, and the cardiac team decides after examination.

Does the doctor speak Russian?

Many doctors in Azerbaijan speak Russian. If needed, an interpreter joins your consultations and hospital stay. Before travelling you can also have an online consultation with the cardiac surgeon.
